Elkhart High School Class of 1961

North Side Spring Choir Concert – 1957

Posted on January 29, 2018April 14, 2018 By Ellen Turnock

This picture and the description were provided by 1961 Classmate Dave Steede. The event was the spring choir concert during  8th grade year at North Side (spring of 1957).

The story is such.  In the “old” days the girls met in one class and the boys in another.  In our class one day the boys asked the teacher, Jim Brownsberger, if we couldn’t sing one of “our” songs instead of all of his.  He asked what song we had in mind.  No one knew what to say except Carlton Hemphill who suggested “Red Sails in the Sunset”.  We all enthusiastically endorsed Carl’s selection and Jim said he would think about it.  Upon leaving class we all asked Carlton what the heck is the song you suggested since no one had ever heard his choice.  Turns out it was the “B” side song to Tab Hunter’s well known  record “Young Love”.  In later years Carl told me he only knew two chords on the piano and those were the two chords used in the song.  After tryouts, those in the group were Carlton Hemphill on the piano, Frank Cummins, Terry Quimby, unknown,  Dick Klingaman, John Cawley, Dave Erne, Dale Pletcher, Howard Alm, Steve Scott, Steve Price, John Peckham, Bob Corpe and Bob Walton.

Years later when Dave talked to Mr. Brownsbergers daughter, Deb Brownsberger -Keys, she told Dave that her father had said that this group absolutely “stole the show”
